Tenerife, the
largest of the Canary Islands, is situated in
the Atlantic Ocean, close to the coast of Africa.
Its location provides it with extraordinary weather
conditions: Tenerife is a land of eternal spring,
with average temperatures of 20 degrees in winter
and 25 in the summer.
The island's capital is Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
|
The island offers the visitor an
endless variety of ecosystems, microclimates and scenery.
Black-sand coves in the north and long golden beaches
in the south; volcanic areas; enchanting walks; abrupt
ravines; and a number of nature reserves. All these
are there to be enjoyed through our contact with nature.
One of the most impressive natural features is the volcano
El Teide. At 3,718 metres, it is the highest point in
Spain, the centrepiece of a major National Park and
a privileged location for observing the firmament.
The island inspires adventure and all sorts of sport:
trekking, sailing, surfing, horse-riding, paragliding
and hang-gliding,the possibilities are endless.
All this is supported by modern facilities
that enable you to enjoy the island's special natural
charm. Tenerife also hosts an array of events throughout
the year: theatre, the plastic arts, photography and,
for lovers of classical music, the unmissable chance
to attend performances of the renowned Tenerife Symphony
Orchestra.
The island's gastronomy is
a further incentive. Tenerife has succeeded in retaining
its most traditional recipes, while remaining open to
new dishes, which explains why you may often find the
most typical restaurants next to modern ones, offering
the most contemporary cuisine. Delicious fish and seafood,
tasty cheeses, excellent wines, honey and the traditional
cereal gofio, all play a part in guaranteeing the richness
of their dish.

Playa
de las Americas :
Playa de Las Americas is the most famous tourist
area, and so this is where you will find plenty
of small beaches, protected by long breakwaters
to stop the made up sand banks being washed away.
Being an area with a large number of tourists, always
count on meeting a considerable crowd on the beaches.
The great thing about this area is that all beaches
are just a footstep away from each other.
This is the place to practise all kinds of water
sports and enjoy lovely scenery. |

Lago
Martiánez
Puerto de la Cruz
The public complex of Costa Martiánez, pride
of Puerto de la Cruz, is one of the most admired
examples of coastal transformation.
|
|
A reputable technical team,
headed by the well-known artist born in Lanzarote
César Manrique, created this exceptional
piece of work adapted to the traditional Canary
architecture and complemented it with original sculptures
and some vegetable elements from the autochthonous
flora.
Its artificial pond, consisting of 27.000 m3 of
sea water, highlights the rest of the pools, four
for adults and three for children use, all of them
show an original layout and beauty. |
Tenerife Culture :
 |

|
Tenerife combines
tradition and modernity in all its cultural manifestations.
It has continued the tradition of some unique and
popular celebrations, such as the numerous fiestas
and romerías, which take place every year.
It has also preserved arts and crafts in the same
way, in the fields of basket-making, embroidery,
ceramics and others. |
 |
Traditional
sports, such as lucha canaria (Canarian wrestling),
juego del palo (a stick-based fighting game), or
salto del pastor
(which involves pole-vaulting down and across steep
ravines), are a good example of the pride with which
the islanders have preserved their traditions.
|
Contemporary arts are also represented on the
island. Permanent examples of these can be found
along the streets, such as Museo en la Calle in
Santa Cruz and the city's more important buildings,
such as the Tenerife Auditorium and the International
Conference Centre both of which were built by
Santiago Calatrava.
Throughout the year you can
find a complete calendar of cultural events, such
as photography, music, dance and theatre. Worthy
of note, are concerts by the Tenerife Symphony
Orchestra, one of the permanent and most renowned
orchestras in Europe.
The island's network
of museums offers a wide variety of exhibitions
to cater for all tastes. |
